the hidden garden

I have a dear school friend and her partner here at the moment staying in the grounds of a beautiful hidden garden. It’s rather fitting, as before she made the move to Australia, she trained with and gardened for the National Trust in some of England’s most admired and inspiring gardens.

I’ve walked and driven past the tall hedge with the double black gate so many times before and had no idea that a heritage cottage and wild, free, almost English looking garden lay behind it.

She’s been helping us design the landscape for our garden – advising us on  planting, structure, shade. The new piece of land backs onto a farm with views across paddocks and the mountain range. We felt that a meadow of wild flowers and grasses would help with the transition from a manicured lawn to the farmland. Little gatherings of fruit trees with mown paths in amongst the meadow planting where Honor could run and catch butterflies, lay a blanket on the ground and picnic. I see it all in my mind’s eye.
