The supermarket where we do our major weekly shop has stopped stocking my husband’s breakfast cereal so we decided to make our own! A quick email to my Mother in Law and minutes later we had the fabulous muesli recipe that he was brought up on. I have to say that it’s delicious and we’re getting ready to make another batch this weekend.

image: homemade muesli

Mix together in a bowl:

6 cups rolled oats

2 cups wheat germ

½ (half) cup of coconut

In a saucepan heat the following:

1 cup brown sugar

½ (half) cup honey

Half cup of oil

1 tsp vanilla

Half teaspoon mixed spice

Half teaspoon cinnamon

Once the above have dissolved add to the dry ingredients

Spread mixture onto a roasting pan and bake at 300F for around 30 minutes or until evenly browned stirring every 10 minutes. Once cool, add dried fruit – we used apricots and raisins – and put into an airtight jar.

Until next time…

  1. Yum! Thanks for sharing. What a pain they stopped selling his cereal but if it means you get to eat this then that’s not really all bad!

  3. Yum, finally a muesli without nuts. I will try this.

  4. Will be interested to hear what you think of it. We like it so much that Greg’s just gone down to Moore Wilson to buy ingredients in bulk!!

  5. I’ve just started making granola and I can’t get over how fresh and delicious it is compared to the store bought.

Oh yeah! I started making mine a couple of years ago, couldn’t get over the difference in taste between bought and home made. Seriously yummy.

  7. Well trying again – wouldn’t publish the longer comment I made!

Sounds great – especially with no preservatives and low-fat. Store bought could never been this good.

Will give it a try when back from Africa – leave next Wed. Excited and a wee bit nervous!

  8. That sounds yummy.

Thanks for your comment Alison, I also read yours still but don’t often comment. I’ve separated out my personal blog from my Crafty one now – and it’s here
